Digital Media

Digital media presents a number of environmental challenges such as significant demand of energy for technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Blockchain, the use of rare earth elements (which are non-renewable) and e-waste. If e-waste is disposed of in landfills, without the consideration of recycling of its parts, it may result in polluting soil and water with toxic substances.

Here are several recommendations that would help you to use digital technologies responsibly:

  • Use renewable energy if possible

Although most web hosting and cloud services are powered by non-renewable energy sources, in many countries you can already find companies that utilise wind, sun or thermal energy.

  • Code efficiently

When you optimize code for interactive or generative art, it helps to reduce processing demands and reduce the amount of energy used.

  • Optimize files

Use high-definition formats only when they are absolutely necessary. For instance, you can probably send a preview file of your work in a lower resolution to a curator before the show. The file in high resolution would be needed just for the exposition. Basically, the lighter a file, the less storage and transmission energy is needed.

  • Don’t throw away devices if they still work

Upgrade only when you must. Repair, resell, or responsibly recycle old hardware.

  • Optimize device usage
Consider using computers with energy-efficient settings. Don’t leave your device working while you are taking a short break. Instead, put your computer into a sleep mode. Review your media storage regularly and get rid of unnecessary files. The same goes for your applications and browser tabs: if you don’t use them often enough, keep them closed.
