Humane condition
A digital storytelling project in the genre of cli-fi
We present fictional stories of climate migrants who are forced to move to places which challenge human physical limits – e. g. an underground town, a village floating on the water, a linear hi-tech city in a desert, and other.
Dwellings in such areas already exist or are being constructed right now. However, most people are not yet used to living in places like these. Today, we see it as a speculative narrative about the future, but as the planet’s population grows, and some parts of the Earth become unsafe for living due to climate change, these scenarios and unconventional urban solutions might become a new normal in the world of tomorrow.
How can we adapt to such unconventional environments? How should we train our bodies to prepare for a possible future? What design problems would surface up in these new unusual homes? What behaviors and interfaces would make our daily lives under the burning sun a little more bearable?

Although this project is of fictional nature, it is based on scientific research and forecasts. Each story is accompanied with an explainer which describes important characteristics of the explored environment and the ways they influence a person’s body. We also provide a list of useful articles and books for those who are interested in further reading.
